About the studio

A renovation studio that grew out of being the second contractor on too many jobs.

Upliftiq Renovation opened its doors in 2014 in Greentown, Ipoh, after our founder Tan Wei Han spent six years inheriting projects from contractors who had quoted low, started fast, and walked when the variations stacked up. Today we are eleven people — project leads, site supervisors and trades — running a steady book of residential refurbishments and small commercial fit-outs across Perak and the Klang Valley.

We will turn away a job before we will rush one, and we would rather lose the tender than carry an allowance line that could embarrass us in month three. Most of what we do is repeat work and referral; we have not paid for an advertisement since 2018.

What we believe

Three principles we hold to even when the brief asks otherwise.

Itemise everything

If a line item reads “allowance” or “PC sum”, you are being asked to sign a blank cheque. Every Upliftiq quotation has supplier-quoted material costs and trade-level labour costs — the way we cost a job for ourselves is the way you see it.

Waterproofing is structural

Membrane work, drainage falls and conduit routing are not finishes. We sequence wet trades the way the membrane manufacturer specifies, even when it costs us an extra week of programme. The 12-month leak warranty exists because we are willing to back the workmanship.

One project lead, every job

The person who quoted your job is the person who is on site when first fix completes. No client manager who has never held a level. No subcontractor handoff. If the project lead is unavailable, the owner of the studio steps in.

Who works here

A small, deliberately stable team.

Most of our trades have been with us five years or longer. We hire slowly, train in-house, and pay above the local trades rate because the cost of an unreliable team is paid by the owner, not by us.

Tan Wei Han — Studio principal

Civil engineering background, 18 years on Malaysian residential and small commercial work. Reviews every proposal that leaves the studio.

Project leads — three

Each runs two to three projects at any time. Holds the WhatsApp thread, the variation log, the schedule and the snag list.

Site supervisors and trades — seven

Licensed plumbers and electricians on staff; masonry, joinery and finishes from a roster of four long-standing subcontracted teams.

What we will not take on

The honest disclaimers.

Full new-build construction

We are a renovation and fit-out studio. New-build single residences and bungalow extensions over 1,500 sqft sit outside our wheelhouse and we will refer them on.

Projects under RM35,000

Below that figure the project management overhead does not pencil out, and we would be doing you a disservice. We are happy to recommend a smaller outfit who handles odd jobs well.

Cosmetic-only briefs

If a quick repaint and new flooring is all you need, we are not the right studio. We do best when there is meaningful joinery, wet-area or planning work in the scope.

Walk us through your property.

Site visits are free across Perak and the Klang Valley. We will not push for a contract on the first visit — you will get a written proposal and ten days to think about it.
